Reciprocity in Multilateral Research Collaboration

On 17th September, Science Europe and the Research Council of Norway (RCN) brought together global leaders in research and societal development for a keynote discussion on "Reciprocity in Multilateral Collaboration" at the Science Summit during the 79th UN General Assembly.

"This event was a unique opportunity to bring together diverse voices from around the world to discuss how we can build mutual trust and cooperation to develop equitable and inclusive partnerships for research," said Mari Sundli Tveit, President of Science Europe, and Chief Executive of the Research Council of Norway. "By fostering deeper collaboration and strengthening the networks that are essential to advance our shared goals we aim to push the frontiers of knowledge and innovation, and address common global challenges for the public good."

The event was framed by policy initiatives such as the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science and the EU Multilateral Dialogue on Principles and Values for International Cooperation on Research and Innovation. Building on the outcomes of Science Europe’s 2023 High-Level Workshop, it addressed critical issues such as knowledge security, Open Science and Diamond Open Access, and emphasised the importance of evidence-based policies to achieve equitable and reciprocal collaboration. Other crucial issues, such as infringements on academic freedom, the influence of predatory journals, and the lack of up-to-date research infrastructures were also discussed.

The main outcome of the event will be the publication of a number of recommendations on the strategies and methodologies aimed at effectively implementing policies that foster academic freedom, inclusivity, and equitable access to research publications and data. These recommendations will be used to extend the dialogue to the broader scientific community, ensuring that the discussions have a wider reach and impact and lay the groundwork for stronger and more inclusive scientific partnerships at a global level.

AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
