University of Konstanz: outstandingly interdisciplinary

The University of Konstanz is deeply committed to promoting interdisciplinary research. The international Interdisciplinary Science Ranking from Times Higher Education (THE) confirms this fact and gives the university excellent scores.
Interdisciplinary cooperation is becoming increasingly important in research. For this reason, Times Higher Education (THE) published its very first Interdisciplinary Science Ranking this year, focusing on interdisciplinary research. The University of Konstanz ranked 3rd nationwide. From a global perspective, the university is among the top 15%, placing 91st out of 749 participating institutions. Interdisciplinarity is foundational for the University of Konstanz, which is confirmed by the great result in the Interdisciplinary Science Ranking.

"For a long time now, interdisciplinarity has been a key factor at our campus university – just look at the wide range of fields involved in our Clusters of Excellence! This is why it is a central part of our concept 'creative.together' in the context of the Excellence Strategy", says Dirk Leuffen, Vice Rector for Research, Innovation and Impact. "We are extremely happy about the international recognition of our commitment to interdisciplinarity through the THE Interdisciplinary Science Ranking".

To assess the contributions of a research institution to interdisciplinarity, the ranking is based on eleven indicators grouped into three areas: "Inputs" examines funding, "outputs" looks at publications, research quality and reputation, and "process" assesses institutional support for interdisciplinary research. In this area, in particular, the University of Konstanz performed particularly well and ranked in the 14-25 range worldwide, and 1st nationwide.

THE Interdisciplinary Science Ranking
The Interdisciplinary Science Ranking from Times Higher Education (THE) was first published in 2024. Its aim is to measure universities' contributions and commitment to interdisciplinary research. This year's ranking only assesses the fields of engineering as well as the natural, life and computer sciences. THE rankings analyze the performance of universities worldwide. Different rankings focus on different areas of university activity: research, impact and teaching.
