Researchers at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca have developed a blockchain-based approach using evolutionary game theory to enhance cooperation, efficiency, and equity in transactive energy communities.

Researchers from the Distributed Systems Research Laboratory at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, a DEDALUS partner, have introduced a novel approach to enhancing efficiency and cooperation in transactive energy communities.

Published in Energy & Buildings, a prestigious peer-reviewed journal focusing on energy efficiency, sustainable design, and advanced building technologies, the Open Access study "Evolutionary Game for Incentivizing Social Cooperation of Prosumers in Transactive Energy Communities" employs evolutionary game theory, specifically the Hawk-Dove model, to optimise peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading among prosumers—households that produce and consume energy.

In this model, prosumers adopting a "Dove" strategy align their energy usage with community needs, while "Hawks" priorities personal gains. Implemented on a blockchain-based local energy market, the approach incentivizes collaboration by rewarding actions that benefit the community and deterring behaviors driven by personal gain. This fosters equitable energy sharing, enhances energy flexibility, and ultimately promotes overall community welfare.

Key results based on real-world energy data and blockchain-based simulations include:

  • 92% of transactions evolve towards cooperative behaviours by the end of market sessions.
  • Traded energy increases by up to 50%, driven by prosumers adapting their behaviours.
  • Transaction costs decrease by 3%, highlighting both economic and social benefits.

"This research demonstrates how advanced game theory and blockchain technology can transform local energy markets, fostering resilience and collaboration within energy communities," said Tudor Cioara, Director of the Distributed Systems Research Laboratory.

Testimonios

We have used AlphaGalileo since its foundation but frankly we need it more than ever now to ensure our research news is heard across Europe, Asia and North America. As one of the UK’s leading research universities we want to continue to work with other outstanding researchers in Europe. AlphaGalileo helps us to continue to bring our research story to them and the rest of the world.
Peter Dunn, Director of Press and Media Relations at the University of Warwick
AlphaGalileo has helped us more than double our reach at SciDev.Net. The service has enabled our journalists around the world to reach the mainstream media with articles about the impact of science on people in low- and middle-income countries, leading to big increases in the number of SciDev.Net articles that have been republished.
