NASA GLOBE Program to Present at 79th UNGA Science Summit
Shaping the Role of STEM to Help Achieve 2030 Sustainable Development Goals

The NASA Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program, with partners Education Development Center, CUNY, SUNY Fredonia, IGES, and Global STEM Education Center, Inc., is proud to lead multiple sessions at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s tenth annual Science Summit.

Launched in 1995, GLOBE is a worldwide science and education program that contributes to increased scientific understanding of the Earth, supports improved student achievement in science and mathematics, and engages citizen scientists.

GLOBE’s three UN General Assembly sessions, which Education Development Center coordinated as part of their work co-leading the GLOBE Implementation Office with CUNY, will spotlight GLOBE’s work to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The Science Summit at UNGA79 is an exciting opportunity to showcase GLOBE’s reach, impacts, and successful work around Earth Science learning and science diplomacy,” said Rebecca Lewis, Education Development Center’s Director of the GLOBE Implementation Office. “We welcome the opportunity to share how initiatives like GLOBE can both help prepare youth, educators, and citizens to advance the SDGs in local communities and create strong, SDG-focused global networks.”

The Summit, which kicks off today and runs until September 26, will focus on the role and contribution of science in attaining the SDGs, and prepare critical inputs for the United Nations Summit of the Future, which will take place on September 20–23.

Educating for Sustainability: The Vital Role of the NASA GLOBE Educators in Environmental Science Diplomacy and UN SDG Achievement

In this session, panelists will share inspiring examples of how GLOBE educators have integrated Earth Science education with learning experiences focused on the UN SDGs, and why this is critical for equipping students and future leaders with the skills and knowledge they need to address environmental challenges.

In this session, panelists will share how the GLOBE Program contributes to achieving the UN SDGs in their countries as examples of how countries worldwide can engage citizens, educators, youth, and scientists in collectively making an impact on their communities and the world. This session will delve into the GLOBE Program's innovative approach to STEM education, emphasizing its impact on cultivating the next generation of global scientists and environmental stewards.

Fostering Global Engagement: Leveraging the NASA GLOBE International STEM Network (GISN)

In this session, panelists will highlight how STEM professionals, educators, and students can collaborate to advance Earth science research and the UN SDGs.
