New York, NY – The International Science Reserve (ISR), an initiative of The New York Academy of Sciences, is pleased to announce that it will co-convene a panel of global researchers and experts to discuss the crisis of extreme heat in cities during the UN General Assembly (UNGA)’s Science Summit on September 27th at 12PM ET.
The free, online event, titled “The Crisis of Acute Heat in the City: Science and Policy Responses,” will discuss how to prepare cities for urban heat islands and their related impacts, including early warning systems, infrastructure mitigation, education, and heat wave management plans.
Co-convened by the ISR and the University of California’s Disaster Resilience Network (UCDRN), panelists have expertise ranging from engineering and urban development to equity and public policy.
Climate scientists and climate change monitoring institutions have predicted that 2024 will be the hottest year on record and will likely break a record previously set in 2023. There is growing concern and action needed in cities worldwide, where temperatures are, on average, higher.
City leaders must respond to and better prepare for the effects of increasingly extreme and frequent heat emergencies, and their related impacts. Panelists will also explore how to ensure urban dwellers, especially those most at risk like the elderly and poor or those in vulnerable geographies, can remain safe.

Panelists for the September 27th 12PM ET event include: Tarik Benmarhnia, a professor of epidemiology at University of California San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Iphigenia Keramitsoglou, the research director of the National Observatory of Athens’ Satellite Earth Observation at Institute for Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Applications, and Remote Sensing, Ronnen Levinson, a staff scientist and leader of the Heat Island Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Chandni Singh, a senior researcher at the Indian Institute for Human Settlements’ School of Environment and Sustainability, V. Kelly Turner, an associate professor of urban planning and geography and associate director of the UCLA Luskin Center for Innovation. Chelsea Harvey, a reporter for POLITICO’s E&E News, will moderate the panel.
