A series of regional agronomy workshops on winter crops are taking place this week for all tillage farmers. The events are hosted by Teagasc researchers, specialists and advisors who will talk about the latest in research and pest control strategies.
Speaking at the National Crops Research centre in Oak Park today, Michael Hennessy, Head of Crops Knowledge Transfer in Teagasc said: “These field events provide an opportunity for growers to gain expert insights and practical advice for a successful season. Among the topics we will be discussing include nutrient management for tillage crops; disease control in winter wheat; and weed control for winter crops.”
Key messages include:
· Fertiliser Quality & Testing: Due to spreadability issues with some urea-based fertilisers last year, farmers should increase on-farm testing of key quality factors, including particle distribution, specific weight, and granule hardness. Specialists at the walks will demonstrate testing methods and recommended actions if fertilisers fall outside specifications. The walks will also cover key settings for major fertiliser spreaders and how these settings impact distribution across tramlines.
· Nutrient Management Planning: Fertilisers account for around 30% of total crop production costs. With cross-compliance rules and the fertiliser database in place, all tillage farmers must complete a nutrient management plan. Specialists will highlight the benefits of proper planning and the potential costs of not having a plan.
· Timely Agronomic Actions: While immediate action isn’t required for some crops, most will need intervention within two weeks. Specialists will outline priority crops for action and those that can wait. However, all farmers should inspect their fields over the coming weeks to identify overwintering weeds, or weak spots, that may need treatment.
· Septoria Control in Winter Wheat: Many farms struggled with poor Septoria control last year. Since Septoria populations evolve over time, affecting the effectiveness of key fungicides, our recommendations for disease control in wheat are changing. These updates, along with variety resistance considerations, will be addressed at the walks.
