The Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) is proud to announce the launch of the Building Dynamic Energy Assessment Tool (BDEA), an advanced platform developed within the REN+HOMES project. The tool redefines the way buildings are assessed for energy performance and smart readiness
The Building Dynamic Energy Assessment Tool (BDEA), developed by The Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) within the REN+HOMES EU-funded project, is platform aimed at assessing energy performance and smart readiness of buildings by integrating cutting-edge methodologies and European certification schemes.
The
BDEA Tool introduces a holistic certification framework that merges
asset and operational rating, aligning with the latest European standards (EN ISO 52000:2017 series). It enhances the evaluation process by incorporating
Smart Readiness Indicators (SRI) to assess a building’s capability to integrate smart technologies. In addition, the platform features two unique tools—the
renovation roadmapping tool and the
SRI Advisor—which guide users in optimising energy efficiency and smart readiness strategies tailored to their specific needs. To ensure seamless documentation and accessibility, all building data is systematically recorded within a
digital building logbook.
“The BDEA platform represents a significant step forward in energy performance assessment and renovation planning. By leveraging advanced digital tools and AI-driven recommendations, we enable stakeholders to make informed decisions that enhance building sustainability and efficiency,” said
Stravos Koltsios, Research Associate at CERTH.
Platform Development and Key Functionalities
While
some components of the BDEA platform were initially developed in previous research projects (
D²EPC and SmartLivingEPC), the tool has been overhauled within
REN+HOMES to meet evolving industry needs.
Key functionalities include:
- Energy Performance Certification: Assesses both theoretical and actual energy performance based on EN ISO 52000:2017 standards, providing an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC).
- Automated data extraction: Integrates Building Information Model (BIM) files (IFC format) and smart meter data for real-time monitoring.
- Smart readiness assessment: Evaluates a building’s smart capabilities using the latest European SRI methodology.
- AI-powered SRI advisor: Uses genetic algorithms to recommend optimal upgrades for improving smart readiness.
- Renovation roadmapping: Generates strategic retrofit scenarios based on EPC results, BIM diagnostics, and system analysis.
- Digital building logbook: Provides a centralized repository for building data, including technical drawings, legal documents, and renovation history.
Testing and deployment
The BDEA platform has been successfully
tested across four pilot sites:
- New constructions: Implemented in Austria and Spain to assess energy efficiency and smart readiness in the design phase.
- Existing buildings: Applied in Romania and Estonia to evaluate performance and generate customized renovation recommendations.
Current status and future developments
The platform has completed its
initial development phase and
is accessible through the link https://ren-plus-homes.iti.gr/. In the meantime, it continues to evolve with
new features and enhancements. Its applications extend across both
construction and operational building phases, making it a versatile tool for various stakeholders in the energy and building sectors.
About REN+HOMES
REN+HOMES is an EU-funded project that aims to contribute to a sustainable transition through the reduction of buildings’ carbon emissions and addressing resource scarcity and energy poverty. To do so, REN+HOMES is developing a universal methodology for positive energy homes and residential districts, deploying a range of key technologies, and integrating software solutions to streamline processes. The project’s solutions are being demonstrated in four demo-sites across Europe, in Austria, Spain, Romania and Estonia.
REN+HOMES started in June 2023 and will end in November 2026.
About CERTH
The Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) is one of the leading research institutions in Europe, dedicated to advancing technological innovation in multiple fields, including energy, environment, and smart cities.
